The first instalment of The ABC Assessment Centre’s YouTube channel series is a brickie’s bread and butter: Forming Cavities & Correct Installation of Wall Ties.

Not exactly a modern method of construction”, you may be scoffing, but The ABC Assessment Centre didn’t decide to create a “how to” install video for this core area of competence just to reinvent the wheel! In fact, far from it.

How Is It Different?

While cavity walling is taught from early on in a bricklayer’s development, The ABC Assessment Centre’s comprehensive short course expands on the core skills involving brickwork, blockwork, fitting insulation and wall tie installation by introducing learners to all types of building products present in cavities.

The course ensures learners are aware of the theory behind why certain products – such as air bricks, DPCs, cavity trays, weep holes, fire barriers, cavity wall insulation, masonry support systems, etc. – are used as part of the formation of a cavity wall, particularly with reference to the latest construction legislation changes. Furthermore, trainees will learn about the importance of setting out any kind of job, as well as the correct specification of wall ties, their compliant spacing and installation according to the Building Regs.

Not Just For Beginners

And the training behind the video is not solely for new entrants into the industry and designed to be given to college students in addition to building their models with their brickwork tutors. No, not when you see work on site that looks like this…

More training is required on forming cavities & correct installation of wall ties even in a site environment

One of the founding principles of The ABC Assessment Centre was – and will always be – to eradicate fraudulent assessment and training on sites up and down the UK. We have always sought to increase levels of competence across the board, including modern methods of construction, and are conscious that there is still a long way to go before this type of work is completely eliminated from the world of construction.

First In YouTube Channel Video Series

One thing we’ve done in recent times to add to our programme of 16 short courses is to create “How To” install videos for each of the practical skills. This way, we can supplement our excellent face-to-face training with top quality video content available 24/7 from any mobile device, tablet or computer.

To give Specialist Brickwork Contractors, Further Education Colleges, Main Contractors, Designers, Specifiers, Manufacturers and Suppliers a glimpse into how the launch of our YouTube channel could be valuable to their business and individuals’ professional development, we’ve created teaser videos to accompany the long-format install guides.

The first in a series of videos we’ll be bringing you over the coming weeks to wet your appetite for the full training content is – yes, you guessed it – how to form cavities and correctly install wall ties. Filmed on The ABC Assessment Centre’s and ACS‘s patented training frames and featuring our very own Centre Manager Simon Livett and Brickwork Trainer/NVQ Assessor Ian Mitchell, we’re really happy with the finished result below…
